Why SAFE exists
Repression does not stop at the border
People challenging authoritarian systems face more than censorship.
They may encounter surveillance, account compromise, intimidation, smear campaigns, pressure through institutions, threats to family members, internet shutdowns and attempts to isolate them from the organisations and communities that support their work.
SAFE Activists brings together activists, researchers, publishers, technologists, cultural workers and human-rights organisations to develop practical ways to respond.
Our aim is simple: help people work more safely, share knowledge across communities, and continue their work despite attempts to silence them.
Our work
Practical projects built around real risks
Our work begins with the problems people actually encounter, not with technology for its own sake.
Secure, low-cost tools for activists working under surveillance, censorship and internet disruption.
Practical research into harassment, smear campaigns, intimidation and transnational repression.
Resources that help communities document incidents, protect information and respond collectively.
What we work on
Understanding the systems used to silence people
Repression rarely relies on one tactic. We look at the wider system — technical, social and institutional — and develop practical responses.
Account compromise, phishing, spyware, device security and safer communications.
Understanding digital and physical monitoring and reducing exposure.
Documenting intimidation, coordinated abuse, impersonation and reputational attacks.
How pressure and intimidation follow activists, writers and journalists into exile.
Circumvention, resilient publishing and maintaining access to information.
Building networks that can continue operating when individuals or organisations are targeted.
